😎 🏝 Chillin’
Saturdays aren’t for working
Every Saturday I’ll bring you something different, just for fun.
I’m as old as a rock now, but once, when I was young I discovered Tom Waits.
It was 1993, I had a double cassette deck, and I was at college, so I could suddenly borrow everybody’s taste.
Magic.
He was deep in his gravel phase, but that initial contact led me to his early work.
Especially his first album, Closing Time.
It’s so beautifully straightforward. Before Sachmo on Steroids. Something I always admired, and this is a song I once imagined I would one day play in a bar.
It’s so different from the way he would perform this two decades later, when he had fully embodied his artistic persona.
I can’t do that kind of gravel without needing two weeks to recover. But I do want to be able to play that song.
Which is why I decided, two years ago, to spend a year learning to perform this song. And did nothing with that decision.
But that is before I knew AI, and its power as a tutor.
I’ve built websites using AI. I’ve grown my newsletter based on advice from AI. If I ask it a good enough question, AI will do me a solid.
And instructing the model to do something very specific is becoming more of a thing. We’ve got Claude projects, ChatGPT GPTs, Gemini GEMS. They are all begging us to give them something very specific to do.
That’s why I’ve asked a bunch of them to teach me how to perform this song in a twelve month framework.
Don’t know yet who will be good at it. They all feel a little sketch right now.
But time will tell and I will tell you all.
🧘♂ Last Word.
When I play this song in public I imagine it will be like this:
Just Chillin’,
