Saturdays aren’t for working
Every Saturday I’ll bring you something different, just for fun.
Mostly YouTube is a tremendous time suck filled with incredibly effective clickbait that can leave you feeling like you binged on endless junk food. As if you’ve just had one too many McNuggets.
On the other hand, it’s also the best place to quickly learn how to fix your toilet. So, it’s definitely a mixed bag.
Once in a while though it offers a window into something you’re unlikely to find somewhere else. Like what regular life is like in Afghanistan, for instance.
Mike is an a masterful storyteller. He’s an English expat who broke through the noise with a series on how he hitch hiked across China without speaking a word of Chinese. He revealed stories of every day Chinese, truck drivers, police, toll station attendants that you wouldn’t have seen anywhere else.
This video is the second in his series on traveling across Afghanistan in which he chronicles the weirdness of being a foreigner in a place which gets almost exclusively bad press. And he struggles with what is troubling about the place while finding friendship and hospitality. It’s a beautiful work of humanization.
No need for antacids after consuming this confection.
Last Word.
It’s easy to be cynical. Optimism, even when paired with a good dose of reality is much more rewarding pursuit.
Till next time,
